What are sight words?

Sight words are just what they sound like… Words you know by sight without sounding anything out. This allows for more fluent reading.

This activity uses the Dolch Sight Word list consisting of up 50 to 70 percent of general text. These service words in this commonly used sight word list are grouped according to frequency and grade level.

Why do we need to teach sight words?

Once Sight Words are memorized, it frees up space in your brain.

Children then use this energy to decode more difficult words and comprehend more complex text.

Confidence is built as words are mastered!

How do I use these slides?

• Click on the link below to get the activity.
• Choose whether you want Google Slides or Seesaw.
• Once you click on the link it will open the appropriate app.
• Don’t forget to Make a Copy!
• Rename the activity so that it is easy for you to locate on your computer! You don’t want to keep the name “Copy of…”

Click on the first slide.

Listen as your child reads the sight word out loud!

The “type it” box is next. In Google Slides, just click the box. Once it is outlined in blue, type the letters right in the box.

In Seesaw, the “T’ will need to be clicked to begin typing.

The last box is the “build it” box. In Google Slides, just click the letters and drag them into the box. Using Seesaw, use the pointing finger to click and drag.

Your child has the opportunity to spell each of these word wall words two times on each slide!

Once a slide is completed, just click on the next slide to practice a new word.

Revisit slides multiple times. Especially the slides that your child finds more challenging!

The slides can be used to introduce, review or assess sight word mastery!

Print and laminate the slides for even more practice!

Once slides have been printed and laminated, dry erase markers can be used to write the words in the “type it” box.

Slides can be used over and over again!

How else can I teach sight words?

We know that young learners require a great deal of repetition for mastery. Researchers say a child must encounter a word approximately 17 time to learn sight words. So, they need LOADS of practice!

Here are some suggestions:

• Write words multiple times using markers, sidewalk chalk, crayons, dry erase markers, water colors or even shaving cream!
• See it, say it, write it over and over again!
• Fill a pan with sugar, salt, sand or pudding and let your child draw the word. Sensory activities are a great way to keep your emergent reader engaged!
• Build the sight words with wiki sticks, clay or pipe cleaners.
• Use letter stamps or stickers to build high frequency words.
• Make 2 sets of flash cards. Play a memory game with these flash cards.
• Send your child on a scavenger hunt to find hidden sight word.
• Focus on only a few words at a time. Once a word is mastered, move onto another!
• Play online sight word games.
• Hunt for sight words in multiple reading materials.
• Write the words on index cards. Cut each word apart. reassemble the word.
• Write the words on an imaginary giant chalkboard.
• Use magnetic letters to spell the words.
