Ten is my favorite number! I tell my students I love it so much because it’s FRIENDLY! Understanding ten helps us work with all those other FUSSY numbers. Ten frames for Numbers 1-10 for Google Slides is a wonderful way for youngsters to explore and manipulate numbers 0-10 visually.

Number flexibility begins in Preschool and Kindergarten as children start to really understand what numbers are, what they represent, and their relationships to each other.

Ten frame math also improves fine motor skills!

Simply click on the picture of the cube, then drag it onto the ten frame. When you’re ready for the next number, just click onto the next slide. You’ll find a ten frame for numbers 1-10.

The ten frames encourage number sense as your Preschooler or Kindergartner manipulates the cubes on each page.

Building numbers 1-10 helps young learners understand the value of each number and how they relate to each other (which one is bigger? smaller? how close to 10?)

Ask thoughtful questions as children build each number on the blank ten frames. “Is this number big or small? How do you know?” or “How many spaces on the ten frame are left? Is the ten frame almost full?”

Questions provide a way for kids to form deeper understandings of numbers 1-10 as they build each number.

How to Build Number Sense in Preschoolers and Kindergartners

Young mathematicians need a lot of practice when developing number sense. This foundation is so important because it will continually be built upon as children grow and learn more complex math concepts.

One of the most important things to remember when teaching number sense is to keep it HANDS-ON.

The more a child can touch, manipulate, and move when counting or building numbers, the better.

As number sense develops, the visual aspect becomes less critical and you’ll notice fluency in building numbers, recognizing numbers, counting groups of objects, and counting orally.

Consider these activities to encourage basic number sense:

  • Oral Counting Games (forward, backward, skip counting by tens or fives, starting/stopping at random numbers)
  • Encourage mental math by posing simple questions (What’s 1+1? How many more dinner plates do we need to set on the table?)
  • Play Guessing Games (I’m thinking of a number that is greater than 8 but less than 10)
  • Build Numbers (Draw a card with a numbers 1-10 written on it, then build that number on a blank ten frame)
  • Compare two groups of objects or two written digits (which one is bigger/smaller? How do you know?)

How To Use 10 Frames

Ten frames are used to show numbers 1-10 in an organized fashion.

Typically, early childhood learners see groups or piles of objects but haven’t yet learned how to organize them into something that has meaning. The ten frame encourages just that, with its rectangular frame including two rows of five boxes each.

When introducing a ten frame to a Preschool/Kindergarten-aged child, I like to relate it to our hands:

Look-we have two hands!

How many fingers on each hand? Five?

That’s right.

How many fingers ALL TOGETHER?

Ten? Wow!

Let’s take a look at the ten frame. Oh my goodness!

There are two rows of five that are equal to ten! Who knew?

Then, start building!

Nothing says learning like early childhood learners rolling up their sleeves and manipulating objects to make numbers.

If you want to print the slides, you can use any small manipulatives you have lying around the house. Consider noodles, Legos, buttons, dried beans, or mini erasers.

Just make sure the object is sized so one object fits neatly into each square of the blank ten frames.

Simply click on the link. Then, it will prompt you to Make a Copy. This step is important because it ensures that you have your very own copy to manipulate. If you don’t make a copy, you’ll be manipulating the original version.

Open your copy in Google Slides. Make sure you are in Edit mode, as opposed to Presentation mode.

In edit mode, click on the first slide. Click on the picture of the cube, which will then be highlighted by a blue box. Make sure your cursor is a plus sign with arrows on each end.

Finally, drag the cube over to the blank ten frame. You can repeatedly highlight the cube at the top and pull it over to create numbers 1-10.

Feel free to print the blank ten frames (even one page would do) so your learner can practice building numbers in ‘real-life’ too!

  • Use a Double Ten Frame to build numbers less than or equal to 20
  • Experiment with number bonds by filling a ten frame with two different colors and naming the matching addition sentence
  • Practice addition and subtraction facts
  • Create fact families for 5 or 10
