Free Digital CVCe Long Vowel /a/ Word Building Activity

Have you ever taught your students a short vowel word like cap… and then a week later they come back reading it as cape instead? 🙃 The silent ‘e’ strikes again! Learning to decode CVCe words—also called Magic ‘e’ words—can be tricky for young readers, especially when they’re just getting confident with short vowel sounds. That’s why I love using this CVCe Long Vowel /a/ Word Building Activity to make learning fun and interactive.

Whether you’re teaching in a classroom, supporting reading at home, or working with a child who needs extra phonics practice, this drag-and-drop word building activity is a fantastic way to introduce and reinforce long vowel /a/ words in a hands-on way. And the best part? It’s completely digital and works with both Google Slides and Seesaw!

Your child will love using the mouse to move consonants and vowels into the right spots within words. Your child will not only be practicing building words, but he/she will also be strengthening identifying letter sounds, fine motor skills and hand eye coordination.

Silent e is known by many different names but they all teach the same rule, an e on the end of a cvc word changes the word so that the vowel becomes a long vowel.

Long vowels say their name.

What Are CVCe Long Vowel /u/ Words?

Before we get too far, let’s break down a couple of terms that might be new:

  • CVCe stands for Consonant-Vowel-Consonant-silent e. Words like cake, tape, late, and page follow this pattern. The silent ‘e’ at the end isn’t pronounced, but it changes the vowel sound in the middle of the word from short to long.
  • You’ll also hear these called Magic ‘e’ words—because the letter ‘e’ has the magical power to make the vowel say its name!

This pattern shows up all the time in early reading, and it’s an essential concept for building decoding skills, spelling awareness, and reading fluency.

Ways to Extend the CVCe Long Vowel /a/ Activity

If your learners are loving the CVCe Long Vowel /a/ Activity….and let’s be honest, most kids do when they get to “build” words like it’s a puzzle… here are some playful, practical ways to take the learning even further. These ideas are perfect for reinforcing the CVCe pattern, giving extra reading and writing practice, and meeting different learning styles.

Hands-On Word Building

Sometimes kids need to feel the letters to really understand how words come together. After completing the digital version, give students magnetic letters, alphabet tiles, or even foam letters and let them physically build the same CVCe long vowel /a/ words.

  • Use a cookie sheet or magnetic board to keep everything in place
  • Have kids build the word, say it out loud, then write it
  • Try simple letter swaps to build rhyming or similar words

📝 Sentence Writing Practice

Now that your students can build the CVCe long vowel /a/ words, have them choose 3–5 of the words and write a complete sentence for each one. Encourage neat handwriting and correct punctuation. For younger learners, turn it into a dictation activity or use it for shared writing practice.

Printable Word Chart Activities

Print the included CVCe Long Vowel /a/ word chart and turn it into:

  • A mini word wall
  • A word/picture matching activity
  • A dry-erase tracing center
  • A cut-and-sort rhyming activity

Perfect for extra reinforcement at a literacy center or at home.

🎲Word Games with a Twist

Play fun, no-prep games like:

  • I Spy a Magic E Word: “I spy a word that rhymes with gate and starts with l…”
  • Memory Match: Match printed pictures to their CVCe words
  • Roll & Read: Roll a die and read a matching word from a chart or card deck

🎧 Rhyming Challenge

After building a word like cake, ask:

👉 “Can you think of another word that rhymes with cake and ends in Magic ‘e’?”
(bake, rake, lake, fake)

Create rhyme charts or anchor charts with your class or let students build rhyme word families using letter tiles.
