Long ‘a’ CVCe Words Google Slides
Looking for the next step after your learner has mastered CVC words? Just when they get “good” at 3 letter Consonant Vowel Consonant words, we throw a wrench into the plan and teach magic e! Long ‘a” CVCe Words Google Slides and Seesaw activities are a fun way to practice building these words in an interactive format!
PLEASE NOTE: The download for this activity includes BOTH Google Slides and Seesaw Format. For ease of reading, this post refers to Google Slides.

Children need a lot of support to master identifying and writing CVCe words. These google slides are a way for your child to practice building long a CVCe words and believe me, new writers need A LOT of practice with writing words!
Silent e is known by many different names but they all teach the same rule, an e on the end of a cvc word changes the word so that the vowel becomes a long vowel.
Long vowels say their name.
Your learner will just need to click on a slide and manipulate letters to build long a CVCe words. Each slide has a picture and letters. The letters are even color coordinated so that your child knows consonants are blue and vowels are red! That can help with the challenging activity of building words independently.
Here are some of the words educators use to help teach CVCe words:
- silent e
- magic e
- mommy e (She tells the short vowels to “Stand up and say your name!”
- long vowels
- short vowels

Why does my student need to know how to build CVCe words?
I always like to say that writing cements reading.
Technically, if a child can write a word, he/she should be able to read the word. As educators, we encourage students to stretch out and write all the sounds they hear.
This is called phonetic writing.
The writing done is not always completely accurate. Typically, a student will write the short vowel sound they hear although a long vowel sound is heard.
A new writer wouldn’t know that in order to change ‘tap’ to ‘tape’ he/she needs to add a magic e. This would make the short vowel sound into a long vowel sound.
You can see why that would be a struggle when it comes to CVCe words. These silent e words are a fun, new challenge!
Rather than having the kids do a boring phonics worksheet, engage them by using technology!

How do I use the Long ‘a’ CVCe words Google Slides?
Once you are in the document, you must Make a Copy.
To Make a Copy, click on file, scroll down and click on Make a Copy. I like to rename my files so that all of my files don’t start with “copy of”.
Once you are in the slides, click on a slide.
Have your child click and drag the letters into the correct spot to create long a words. There is also an answer key slide just in case you aren’t sure what the word is! You may also want to print the slides so that your child now has long a CVCe worksheets which he/she can actually use to write the words independently!

How else can I help my learner with CVCe words?
Magic e words can be tricky and require a lot of practice. Here are just a few suggestions for more magic e activities:
- Use magnetic letters to build words.
- Create CVC word cards. Use a magic e card to add to the cvc word to create new long vowel words.
- Give your child a small group of letters and have him/her create new words using magic e.
- Create a group of CVCe word families. (name, tame, fame)
- Give your child pictures of words. Have him/her sort the words long a, short a.

Hi! I s there a way to download multiple files for the google slides. I AM IN LOVE with how simple your google slides are and I would love to keep them with my resources. I’d be happy to even pay for the bundle if needed! Thank you!
I don’t have a bundle at this time, but I am considering it. I will do some research on it. 🙂
Thank you 😊
Great resources
This is awesome! Thanks Kim!
