Why does my child need to develop Visual Discrimination skills?

First and foremost, let’s discuss the definition of visual discrimination.

Visual Discrimination is the ability to recognize details in visual images.

Why do kids need this skill? Completing this what does not belong activity will help with sorting and matching letters. Identifying differences in letters will help with reading. Therefore, being able to discriminate how letters are alike and different is key to successful reading.

The ability to identify the subtle differences between letters like b and d is essential for readers. As a kindergarten teacher, I know many of the students really struggle with identifying letters that look alike. Even W and M are often confused. Kindergartners need strong visual discrimination skills! These slides are another tool to build this skill.

Once a kindergartner understands the differences between letters, numbers and shapes, it’s time to read!
