One of the many things I love about kindergartners is how observant they are! They have a keen eye for searching for patterns and identifying them. This is one of the reasons kindergarten is the perfect time to begin learning about patterns. Children will love creating beautiful, colorful flower patterns with these Digital and Printable Complete AB Pattern Hands on Activities for Kindergarten.

This hands on pattern activity for kindergarten provides fun and interactive practice for pattern recognition.

Preschool and kindergarten kids will love figuring out the pattern and selecting the flowers that complete the rest of the pattern.

Completing patterns worksheets for kindergarten can also be good practice for working on patterns, but my kids always prefer something a little more hands on.

No matter if you are a kindergarten or preschool teacher doing virtual or in person instruction, you can make the digital or printable activity work for your lesson plans.

Teaching Patterns To Kindergarten Students:

When teaching pattern recognition for kindergarten, you can start out super simple!

Begin by seeing what patterns you can notice around the classroom or your home, when you are reading books, or when you are having playtime.

When you are learning about patterns in kindergarten, there are tons of opportunities to be creative and make patterns hands on for young children.

See if your child can notice any repeating patterns or colors on any of their toys or blankets.

Use stickers, blocks, and even food to create patterns with kids.

As your child learns to recognize patterns, you can start to work on copying patterns and completing (extending) the pattern.

Children love trying to create their own patterns. This is a great activity that helps develop critical thinking skills.

Other Ways To Use This Pattern Activity:

  • To help a child who is just beginning to learn about patterns, help them identify the pattern first by pointing to each flower and having them name the colors. Once they have the hang of figuring out the pattern on their own, you can let them try independently.
  • If you are teaching about other types of patterns like abb, instead of using abb pattern worksheets for kindergarten, try out this printable and digital abb donut pattern activity!
  • Make this activity a one time use activity and turn it into a coloring page opportunity! Just have your child draw and color the flowers into the boxes that would complete the pattern.
  • After you have mastered completing flower patterns try to create your own shape patterns using shape blocks, stickers, or just drawing your own shapes.
  • For some extra fine motor skill practice grab a pipe cleaner and some beads. Recreate the same color pattern that matches the flower pattern using the beads strung onto the pipe cleaner.
